<Poem>
I
III
<End Poem>
<Translation>
I
Shadows of fireflies flit across her jade window,
Men's voices vanished from the golden palace.
She huddles behind the lattice these fall evenings—
Her lonely light burns brightly—then goes out.
II
Autumn grass grows tall in the palace court
But the Emperor's favour grows short.
How can she bear to listen to sweet music!
His golden chariot no longer pauses outside her
chamber.
III
Her dressing room is closed—small wonder.
After the morning levee she welcomes him no more.
When she walks in her spring garden
Mocking whispers blended with laughter rise among the
flowers.
